Join the National Convenors of the Australian Women’s History Network!

Seeking Expressions of Interests for new National Convenors of the Australian Women’s History Network.

The Australian Women’s History Network (AWHN) is calling for Expression of Interest (EOIs) from those interested in joining the National Convenor team.

We wish to build a new team in which the various career stages are represented. We welcome interest from AWHN members based in any state or territory or overseas. To ease the burden of precarious AWHN members, we particularly encourage stably employed AWHN members to join the team.

Established in 1987, the Australian Women’s History Network has become the centre of scholarly activity relating to feminist, gender, and women’s history. Under the auspices of the AWHN, the Lilith Editorial Collective publishes Lilith: A Feminist History Journal annually and VIDA: Blog of the Australian Women’s History Network has produced over 250 blogs.

The role of the AWHN National Convenors entails leadership and service in running the AWHN, including the following:

Kate Millington, Typical Girls, 1984, screenprint, ink on paper, 50.9 x 37.8 cm, Gift of Kate Millington, collection of Flinders University Museum of Art 4648.051 © the artist.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively and cooperatively with all members of the National Convenor team, including convenors, mentors, and state convenors;
  • Lead email communication with the AWHN membership and other stakeholders, including scholars and practitioners at all levels;
  • Lead the organisation of the AWHN stream at the annual Australian Historical Association Conference, including the AWHN dinner;
  • Convene and judge the AWHN’s suite of bursaries and prizes, including travel bursaries and publication prizes (scholarly publications and blogs);
  • Manage and maintain the AWHN’s financial, reporting, and membership records in conjunction with the AWHN Public Officer;
  • Collate newsletter items for and from the AWHN membership and the International Federation for Research in Women’s History;
  • Maintain the AWHN’s website and social media;
  • Lead advocacy initiatives on behalf of the AWHN National Convenors and the broader AWHN membership;
  • Liaise with the Lilith Editorial Collective and the Managing Editors of VIDA: Blog of the Australian Women’s History Network; and
  • Lead and prepare for the AWHN’s Annual General Meeting.

Addendum: This is the opportunity you’ve been looking for to be the groundswell beneath the next AWHN feminist dance party at the AHA!

The AWHN National Convenor team meets monthly for approximately 10 months of the year. These are voluntary leadership and service roles within the AWHN; as such, these roles are unremunerated.

Benefits:

Being part of the AWHN National Convenor team is a great way to build your career in the university sector, the public history and heritage sector, and/or the GLAM sector. These roles give you the opportunity to shape the AWHN’s direction, outreach, and advocacy while establishing important connections with emerging and leading scholars in the field, both nationally and internationally.

The amount of time dedicated to being an AWHN National Convenor is negotiable and flexible between team members all year round.

This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow feminist historians and expand your network in feminist, gender, and women’s history.
